The Basic Input / Output System (BIOS) of a computer is the first code that runs when the computer starts up. The program is stored in a firmware ROM (actually an electrically erasable programmable ROM or EEPROM). The chip is either soldered or placed on the motherboard. The BIOS is responsible for initializing peripheral devices such as graphics card, keyboard, mouse, and hard drive. It then searches for the operating system stored on the hard disk (or other medium), and that operating system starts. This startup process is also known as startup.

Given the importance of the BIOS and the tasks for which it is responsible, the BIOS can and should be updated, just as operating systems and applications are updated. Updating the BIOS is called flashing. “Flashing” refers to the process of electrically erasing a ROM chip (ie EE in EEPROM) and flashing a newer and updated BIOS.

How do you know if I should update BIOS?

First, visit your motherboard manufacturer's website and find the download or support page for your motherboard model. You should see a list of available BIOS versions as well as any changes / fixes and release dates. Download the version you want to upgrade to.

One of the most common BIOS questions is flashing. However, before we can explain the BIOS flashing process, we need to figure out how to access the BIOS menu system and how to determine the current BIOS version.

Enter BIOS

It looks like some kind of karate movie or something. But it's actually very simple. A year of physical fitness is not required. The BIOS can be accessed by pressing a specific key while starting the computer. This key depends on the manufacturer of the computer or motherboard. Common keys include DEL, F1, F2, and F10. Often this button appears somewhere on the screen when you first start your computer. However, if you don't see it and instead see a splash screen with the manufacturer's logo, just press Esc to delete the logo. The access key (and other startup information) will then be displayed. Since 2010, the Esc key has been less commonly used as many motherboard manufacturers display the BIOS access key on the main home screen.

For example, in the illustration 1 we see a screenshot of the system startup. He asks us to press DELETE to access the setup (another name for the BIOS menu system).
