If you receive an error code for SQL Server 2012 SP2, today's blog post was created to help you.
SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 Has Been Released
SQL Server is not on the upgrade schedule that Visual Studio observes today, when it is unusual to run two months without any builds. However, one version gets a new service pack and several other additions.
According to Microsoft's announcement, SP2 is RTM (Release to Manufacturing) nomenclature. This is an outdated Microsoft term that indicates that the device manufacturer's software is ready to manipulate hardware images - in other words, the retail version.
SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 (SP2) can be downloaded here, but will be available via Microsoft Update at the end of July.
Microsoft offers SP2 in 32-bit and 64-bit for SQL Server 2012, as well as Management Studio and Express editions. SQL Server 2012 SP2 Report Builder, which supports publishing reports and data visualizations, and SQL Server 2012 SP2 Feature Pack, which provides the latest tools and add-ons for relational database management. from Microsoft, also were released this week.
SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes updates based on customer feedback since the latest Service Pack and since Cumulative Update 9. Microsoft has always added support and feature fixes for Microsoft Always On. This is a high availability and disaster recovery feature of SQL Server 2012. Analysis Services, an online analytical processing (OLAP) product, was supported with Service Pack 2 (SP2) for creating local cubes. Integration Services, the product's data integration feature, has found a solution to the deadlock problem. Microsoft has added some performance fixes to the relational and storage engine of the product. Reporting Services now warns when a large HTML report is causing performance degradation.
Microsoft highlights the strengths of the SP2 release in this blog post. For a list of all the fixes in SP2, see this Microsoft support article.
Microsoft previously announced that SP2 will return in February, but did not specify when it will arrive. Unlike press accountComrade, Microsoft continues to release service packs for its enterprise-grade software products, although the company has moved to a faster and less predictable software release cycle.
Microsoft doesn't use service packs these days. For example, on the Exchange side, Microsoft describes service packs as if they were just another cumulative update. However, companies may still view service pack releases as key points to offset and deliver software updates to Microsoft in general.
In the announcement, Microsoft announced that the company plans to release the next cumulative update for SQL Server 2012 SP2 by the end of July 2014. Therefore, IT organizations need a little over a month to deploy SP2 if they want to keep up with Microsoft's cumulative release schedule.
