Spybot - Search & Destroy (S & D) is a Microsoft Windows compatible spyware and adware removal program that includes free and paid versions. Spybot dates back to the first adware in 2000 and scans a computer’s hard drive and / or memory for malware.
Spybot-S & D was written by German software engineer Patrick Michael Koll and is distributed by the Irish company Kolla Safer-Networking Limited. Development began in 2000, when a student called Coll wrote a small program for the Aureate / Radiate and Conducent TimeSink programs, two of the earliest examples of adware.
Spybot - Search & Destroy is available as a free program for private users with more functional versions. Professional and technical users must purchase a commercial version. Paid versions contain an anti-virus component that uses the BitDefender engine.
Spybot Features
In addition to detecting and disinfecting spyware and adware, Spybot-S & D can record LSP Winsock, ActiveX objects, browser hijackers and BHO, PPI, HTTP cookies, tracking tools nia, page hijackers. high-performance hosting, keyloggers, recovery of LSP and tracks, trojans, spies, reviews and other types of malware. Tracking cookies can also be deleted. Spybot-S & D has a vaccination function to block the installation of spyware before this happens, for example, by changing the hosts file. Safe eraser included. Spybot-S & D was not originally intended to replace anti-virus programs, but supplemented them (up to version 2.1 “Spybot + AV”), but detected some common trojans and rootkits. A separate rootkit search engine, RootAlyzer, is available.
Some programs come with spyware or adware and cannot work if they are not there. Newer versions of Spybot replace spyware binaries with dummy dummies (designed to trick programs that simply check for the spyware file).

Conflicts With Commercial Antivirus
In 2009, it was reported that users of several commercial security products had to uninstall Spybot S&D, available for free during installation or runtime, due to incompatibility with the resident TeaTimer "Immunizer" (Real-Time Spybot Protection app) ... ,
The creators of Spybot-S & D came into conflict with Norton Internet Security in 2006 due to compatibility issues. Symantec recommended uninstalling Spybot-S & D before installing Norton Internet Security. According to Safer Networking, they have not received a satisfactory explanation for this decision. Antivirus specialist Mary Landesman suggests a possible explanation could be due to a graphical error in the mod confirmation dialogUlya TeaTimer. An official statement by Safer Networking states that the error was caused by an error in the program used to create the code. As a result of this error, it was difficult for users to allow Norton Internet Security to make the necessary changes to important areas of the registry, such as: B. Starting at computer startup. In addition, Mary Landesman and Safer Networking concluded that the two programs have no problems with each other. The bug was fixed in version 1.5.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security starting from version 2009 require that users uninstall Spybot during the installation process, although no serious incompatibilities are known so far. The discussion ended at the Kaspersky forum, which said that Spybot should not be installed at all. Kaspersky does not seem to solve the problem, despite several complaints. Incompatibility between products may occur when Spybot S & D attempts to modify the hosts file (if it was selected by the user during vaccination). , which Kaspersky interprets as an attempt to maliciously manipulate the file. It is possibleavoid by not immunizing the hosts file in Spybot S & D.
Internet Explorer 8
Spybot - Thanks to the immunization feature, Search & Destroy Internet Explorer 8 ran slower than expected. KB969897, which fixed this issue while resolving some other vulnerabilities, was released by Microsoft in 2009.
